Your most embarrassing date moment?
I once had a date during a time when I’d decided to live on Soylent (a food replacement shake) as a one-time experiment, so dinner or drinks weren't options. My date was still game to meet and convinced me to go with her to an empty karaoke bar, on a weeknight, sober. We got a private room for 2, and as the first duet began, I found out she moonlit as a professional singer. I spent the next 90 minutes swallowing my pride as I tried desperately to serenade this girl, mostly off-key, as she laughed with a mix of amusement and pity. I had no choice but to close my eyes, belt it out, and totally own it. Amazingly, she went out with me again.
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
Before business school, I was given an opportunity to move to Silicon Valley and work for a tech investment fund. I’ve been a passionate tech guy since I was 2 years old, so getting the chance to build my network out there and work alongside super-smart investors and entrepreneurs while getting paid to do it? That was a pretty exciting, life-long dream for me. A few years and a few deals later, I realize that experience was both the inspiration and foundation for my career in tech startups.
