Your most embarrassing date moment?
Went on a blind date a year or so after graduating from college. Arrived at the restaurant bar about 15 minutes ahead of schedule and sat down next to a young woman whom I thought was my date. We exchanged hellos and names -- and she had the correct name -- so the conversation kept going. I sensed an immediate spark and we seemingly had a great connection, until my actual date arrived. The realization moment was awkward and the rest of the date went poorly. And I never saw the first woman again!
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
I was honored to receive an Edward R. Murrow award for my three-part report on the staff and patients who were trapped at New Orleans' Charity Hospital in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. However, awards were definitely not on my mind while covering Katrina and the subsequent levee failures. It was a powerful, sobering experience to get such an up-close look at the devastation of my hometown. Now, after spending many rewarding years as a journalist, I'm humbled to take part in what has become one of the most critical efforts in New Orleans over the past few years -- the total rebuilding of the public education system.
